Demigods Nico di Angelo and Will Solace must endure the terrors of Tartarus to rescue an old friend in this thrilling adventure co-written by New York Times #1 best-selling author Rick Riordan and award-winning author Mark Oshiro. Percy Jackson fans, rejoice! Nico and Will have a book of their own! As the son of Hades, Nico di Angelo has been through so much, from the premature deaths of his mother and sister, to being outed against his will, to losing his friend Jason during the trials of Apollo. But there is a ray of sunshine in his life--literally: his boyfriend, Will Solace, the son of Apollo. Together the two demigods can overcome any obstacle or foe. At least, that's been the case so far . . . Now Nico is being plagued by a voice calling out to him from Tartarus, the lowest part of the Underworld. He thinks he knows who it is: a reformed Titan named Bob whom Percy and Annabeth had to leave behind when they escaped Hades's realm. Nico's dreams and Rachel Dare's latest prophecy leave little doubt in Nico's mind that Bob is in some kind of trouble. Nico has to go on this quest, whether Mr. D and Chiron like it or not. And of course Will insists on coming with. But can a being made of light survive in the darkest part of the world? and what does the prophecy mean that Nico will have to "leave something of equal value behind?" Nico will have to face demons both internal and external as his relationship with Will is tested to the core in this standalone adventure featuring two of the most popular characters in the Percy Jackson saga. "I honestly don’t know what to rate this. It was written by someone who clearly doesn’t get the characters and just wants to flex their knowledge of the series, referencing past books way too often. The first page was great. I loved it. There were funny moments and some genuinely sweet moments. But overall it’s very obvious that Mark doesn’t actually understand Nico or Will and just wanted to write a queer story in the Percy Jackson universe. I think a different author who identifies with Nico or Will would have been better suited to write this. It’s not BAD but as someone who relates so strongly to Nico…..I can’t like it. They argue CONSTANTLY and the big moment near the end wasn’t as big or impactful as it should have been. And Nico doesn’t have to completely change. It’s okay to grow but still be you. Obviously Mark doesn’t agree. "
"EDIT:
I’ve been thinking about it a lot and this book actually disappointed me so much, I can’t believe this was published as is but that just me ranting about my favorite author releasing a truly not well written book. Rick riordan books are my safe space and they have been since I was 8, and this one did not live up to that… idk man it just made me sad
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
okay so I have a lot of feelings about this book and I feel like this review might get chaotic so please bear with me
okay so first things first; i grew up reading percy jackson, he's my favorite character ever written and those first 5 books will always be my favorite books on this planet. i love rick riordan, i love nico, i absolutely love will, and i liked this book. HOWEVER!! there is one big thing that kept me from giving this 5 stars like i do most of ricks books.
this books.. draaaagged on. a lot. and the reason i felt it was so slowly paced was because for some reason, in this book, there was SO much telling and not enough showing. we were told how nico felt, over and over and over. thats another thing, there was so much repetition! and i get WHY, like the lesson in this book is kinda deep and it is a middle grade book so i guess the authors wanted the message to be very clear, but usually in Rick Riordans books, he gets the message across by letting the reader come to understand it themselves, without it being spoonfed to us. NOT WITH THIS ONE! its like we're constantly bombarded and hit over the head with the same things. we see so much of nico and wills inner monologue and its so repetitive, i just felt like the message was being shoved down my throat by the end of the book. kinda like me telling you how much i hated the repetitveness three times in the last 2 sentences lmao... i really loved what they were trying to do with this, i love the messgae theyre trying to send, like yeah its okay to be emo dark boi and its okay to be shiny smile boi and both of those are good things and yadda yadda... i just wish they went about it in a more subtle way.
also, why were all the previous characters we see so inconsistent? why does nico make it sound like he hates percy and annabeth?? like, again, i get WHY but why? i love percy and annabeth and hearing them being talked down about like that ****** me tf off i cant lie. it felt like this book was written purely to please fans at times, especially at the end and there were just things that made no sense but i was kinda just like... okay? Idk but I guess it worked because tons of fans loves this book and I’m happy for them! they deserved to love this, I’m just currently wallowing in self pity because I’m so disappointed in this
besides that though, rick is my favorite author and ill love anything he writes. i did kinda want more action but i think my mistake was expecting this to be like percy jackson when its clealry its own thing, co-written with a different author whos style i guess im not a fan of. overall this is a 4 stars for me but id be more likely to re-read any of ricks other books before i re-read this... not that its saying much because i LOVE everything rick has ever written but this was my least fave in the riordanverse.
i feel like i should list some positives now lmao, i love nico, i love wil SO MUCH, i really appreciated the message this book delivered and the plot was really good, if a little slow. will solace is my baby and must be protected at all costs
i just hope the new percy jackson thats coming out doesnt disappoint like this book did because i genuinely dont think i could take that
anyways"
"Was this book perfect? No. Will that stop me from giving it five stars? Also no. Do I care? No. These books always fill me with so much joy. I love Nico and Will to death. They are one of the cutest couples I've seen. I love how they talk about their relationship, and problems that they have. The plot was really good as well. It was engaging and I wasn't usually bored. This book is so heartwarming, and definitely worth reading."
