A young woman discovers her mysterious powers could help catch a killer in the first book of The Diviners series--a stunning supernatural historical mystery set in 1920s New York City, from Printz Award-winning and New York Times bestselling author Libba Bray. Evangeline O'Neill has been exiled from her boring old hometown and sent off to the bustling streets of New York City--and she is ecstatic. It's 1926, and New York is filled with speakeasies, Ziegfeld girls, and rakish pickpockets. The only catch is that she has to live with her uncle Will and his unhealthy obsession with the occult. Evie worries he'll discover her darkest secret: a supernatural power that has only brought her trouble so far. When the police find a murdered girl branded with a cryptic symbol and Will is called to the scene, Evie realizes her gift could help catch a serial killer. As Evie jumps headlong into a dance with a murderer, other stories unfurl in the city that never sleeps. And unknown to all, something dark and evil has awakened....

"I like the atmosphere of the book and the time period. It just seemed like the book didn't anywhere much. There was a lot about the different characters but their futures were kind of just bland. I wish I needed to read each chapter to see what would happen next. It just didn't grasp me I guess. I liked the characters but I wasn't on the edge of my seat. The narrator of the audiobook was amazing though I think she made the book more creepy than it actually was. Just all in all ok. Not sure I want to read the next book.

Update: Now that I'm back in the creepy season I have been thinking about this book and I might try to read the next. The atmosphere in this book is just amazing making me feel like I was there in the dark streets. I just hope the story picks up."
"Not a fan of books about the paranormal."

"When I say I had to fight to put this book down, especially towards the climax and ending, I mean I had to FIGHT. This book really sucks you in to The Diviners universe and you feel what each character is feeling mixed with your own emotions. I was so frustrated in the beginning, knowing the killer was supernatural while the cast was looking for a (reasonable) human culprit. I found myself responding to the characters aloud, saying things like, “Well, Evie, maybe…” or “If you guys would just…” Of course, we’re left with questions regarding Sam’s mom, a new antagonist (I presume) and so much more. I definitely recommend this book if you’re into fantasy and the Hollywood/mass media interpretation of the supernatural, along with a not-so-mystery-mystery-murder(s)."

"DNF at "The Good Citizen" -- I stopped reading because I lost interest, I'll likely pick it up again."
