Bram Stoker Award nominee for Best First Novel!"This claustrophobic, horror-leaning tour de force is highly recommended for fans of Jeff VanderMeer’s Annihilation and Andy Weir’s The Martian." -- Publishers Weekly (starred review)The thrilling, atmospheric debut from the author of The Death of Jane Lawrence, a novel with the intensive drive of The Martian and Gravity and the creeping dread of Annihilation, in which a caver on a foreign planet finds herself on a terrifying psychological and emotional journey for survival. When Gyre Price lied her way into this expedition, she thought she’d be mapping mineral deposits, and that her biggest problems would be cave collapses and gear malfunctions. She also thought that the fat paycheck—enough to get her off-planet and on the trail of her mother—meant she’d get a skilled surface team, monitoring her suit and environment, keeping her safe. Keeping her sane.Instead, she got Em.Em sees nothing wrong with controlling Gyre’s body with drugs or withholding critical information to “ensure the smooth operation” of her expedition. Em knows all about Gyre’s falsified credentials, and has no qualms using them as a leash—and a lash. And Em has secrets, too . . .As Gyre descends, little inconsistencies—missing supplies, unexpected changes in the route, and, worst of all, shifts in Em’s motivations—drive her out of her depths. Lost and disoriented, Gyre finds her sense of control giving way to paranoia and anger. On her own in this mysterious, deadly place, surrounded by darkness and the unknown, Gyre must overcome more than just the dangerous terrain and the Tunneler which calls underground its home if she wants to make it out alive—she must confront the ghosts in her own head. But how come she can’t shake the feeling she’s being followed?

"The Luminous Dead is a sci-fi horror novel, which is not usually something I'm drawn to. The synopsis of this one was so damn captivating that I had to give it a chance, and I'm so glad that I did! I loved this book, and tore through it since I had to know what was going on.

I have not read anything from Caitlin Starling before, but I'm definitely a fan now. It is truly impressive to write a book set in a closed environment with two characters and be able to hold my attention the entire way through. It was so mysterious to me, and I was dying to found out what led up to the story, and that was going to happen.

There are a lot of secrets and lies in this book, and I really enjoyed watching everything unravel. I also liked that this book had two queer women as the main characters, and it was really refreshing since I have not seen a ton of horror with F/F relationships. There are definitely some, but I haven't come across that many (also, let me know if you have any to recommend).

The Luminous Dead provides a great sense of dread and claustrophobia. This book is incredibly atmospheric - it's set in a cave system, which is not ever a place I want to be. It has good survival horror vibes - I was never certain how things were going to work out, and I loved the suspense. This was an intense read for me, and I really enjoyed it.

Thank you so much to Harper Voyager for sending me a copy of The Luminous Dead. This fantastic book will be out on April 2nd, and I highly recommend picking it up! I hope to read more from Caitlin Starling in the future."
"I had to dnf at 33%. A queer psychological horror set in a cave sounded like my dream book. But I’m bored to tears and wondering when the luminous dead are finally going to show up. I thought I was getting close to like 70% or more of the way done and saw I was not even close and had to call it quits. Just not the book for me."
"Are you looking for a fast-action story about space-zombies?! If so, stop now! This book is not that.
Are you looking to read 300 pages about spelunking for weeks in a cave while wearing a futuristic space suit with a radio-comm support? Then you've found your novel. The only thing worse than slowly and meticulously climbing rocky cliffs and swimming in dingy water is reading about someone else doing it. There is very little that happens.
I admit there are a few mysteries (wtf is a "Tunneler"? And is she losing her mind or are there really others in that cave with her?) But they don't save the slow paced novel about someone searching a space-cave...and the half-assed lesbian love story (don't get me wrong, I love a good lesbian love story) only took away from whatever character development was happening over 300+ pages.

Save yourself the time and go watch the Descent if you're craving women climbing through spooky and mysterious caves. Because again, this is not that."
"A slow but tense book about a woman who gets more than she bargained for signing up for a mysterious underground expedition with a paycheque that was too good to be true. I liked the descriptions of the caving itself and the push and pull between the main characters, the caver and her handler. I do think Em wound up being a bit too soft (and it's sort of weird imo that she's so young considering she's already sent over 20 expeditions into this cave by the time Gyre tries it) and the Tunneler was scarier before the baffling decision near the end to force a confrontation with it but overall great book."
