A Holmes and Watson–style detective duo take the stage in this fantasy with a mystery twist, from the Edgar-winning, multiple Hugo-nominated Robert Jackson Bennett“Great fantasy detective stories are too rare, but Bennett—[a] rising star of fantasy—more than delivers.”—Charlie Jane Anders, The Washington Post“A thoroughly satisfying delight from start to finish.”—Amal El-Mohtar, The New York Times Book ReviewA BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: The New York Times Book Review, NPR, Elle, BookPageIn Daretana’s greatest mansion, a high imperial officer lies dead—killed, to all appearances, when a tree erupted from his body. Even here at the Empire’s borders, where contagions abound and the blood of the leviathans works strange magical changes, it’s a death both terrifying and impossible.Assigned to investigate is Ana Dolabra, a detective whose reputation for brilliance is matched only by her eccentricities. Rumor has it that she wears a blindfold at all times, and that she can solve impossible cases without even stepping outside the walls of her home.At her side is her new assistant, Dinios Kol, magically altered in ways that make him the perfect aide to Ana’s brilliance. Din is at turns scandalized, perplexed, and utterly infuriated by his new superior—but as the case unfolds and he watches Ana’s mind leap from one startling deduction to the next, he must admit that she is, indeed, the Empire’s greatest detective. As the two close in on a mastermind and uncover a scheme that threatens the Empire itself, Din realizes he’s barely begun to assemble the puzzle that is Ana Dolabra—and wonders how long he’ll be able to keep his own secrets safe from her piercing intellect.By an “endlessly inventive” (Vulture) author with a “wicked sense of humor” (NPR), The Tainted Cup mixes the charms of detective fiction with brilliant world-building to deliver a fiendishly clever mystery that’s at once instantly recognizable and thrillingly new.

"3.5 ⭐️ It took me awhile to get into this and honestly I’m not sure I ever felt truly invested in the story. I did enjoy the magic system in this world. Din’s abilities were unique and I found the different characters interesting. I think I kept reading more for the characters than for the storyline. It definitely gave a bit of a Sherlock and Watson vibe which was fun, I just felt like the pacing was off for me. "
"Unique fantasy whodunit with many unexpected twists. Excellent worldbuilding and fabulous characters, including a savant detective who wears a blindfold 24/7 to restrict unnecessary sensory information and an assistant investigator who has been artificially altered to have a perfect photographic memory. A man has been killed by a tree suddenly sprouting through his chest, and the duo is on the hunt to find out what happened. An unusual, creative page-turner! "

"The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett 5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I loved everything about this! The characters, the world, the augmentations! The mystery and engineered murder weapon was terrifying and intriguing! The Titans were also cool and I hope we come back to those later! Can't wait for the next book in the series!"
"If you like the sound of...
- Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, except it's a brilliant, autistic-coded woman desperate for justice through investigation with a dyslexic disaster bisexual assistant.
- The idea of being able to alter yourself, and it NOT being used to 'fix' these neurodivergencies and having the characters still having to work around them.
- A really interesting alternation/magic system with a huge potential for angst for the main characters later on.
- BIG MONSTER PLOTLINE.
- And, despite being in a very complicated world, a fantasy book that's very easy to follow...
You'll probably love this book."

"this book was beautiful. i loved the world, and i’m so excited to see more of it in the next book. big leviathans attacking walls in the middle of a whodunnit murder mystery?? yes please! the focus was mainly on the murder, which i was fine with because i loved the investigation process. i never felt bored. din and ana had a lovely dynamic, and i hope to learn more about who they are as people. there is SO much that can happen here 😍"
"“Civilization is often a task that is only barely managed. But harden your heart and slow your blood. The towers of justice are built one brick at a time. We have more to build yet”

I LOVED this book. The visuals were stunning and I was immediately pulled into this world. RJB writes such entertaining characters (Ana!) and natural dialogue that makes the people and world feel so real. The relationships between the characters created tender moments that stuck with me. So excited for the next book !

Also can we talk about Strovi and Kol? The perfect amount of suuuuper subtle romance that wasn’t overbearing and it was so wholesome. It was an unexpected little touch that made my heart happy."
