Emily Bronte
Published in 1845, Emily Bronte’s gothic novel set on the windy moors of Yorkshire is the story of the doomed love between Catherine Earnshaw and her father’s adopted son, Heathcliff. The book was initially poorly received by many critics who found its dark, tragic story needlessly harsh and disturbing. That opinion has not endured, and the only novel Emily Bronte published is now considered to be one of the great classics of English literature.

"⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ this book is difficult but brilliant. It’s no romance but tragedy. Heathcliff is NOT tortured romantic hero but abuser, a sociopathic narcissist to be pitied & abhorred. His story is of pathological revenge at the expense of everyone around him & his obsessions mean more than anything else in his life. This book is about THAT. And the destruction it leads to. Everything about it is hard but compelling. The writing is dense but beautiful. I can see why it’s polarizing. But I loved it. "
"This is not my type of novel, old fashioned / Gothic/ overly dramatic / high romance. Yet, after hearing about the Bronte Sisters forever, I decided to give it a read during a vacation.
It's magnificent, breathtaking, brilliant, intense, heartbreaking, the writing is beautiful.
Five stars.
*Kate Bush wrote a song about this novel."
"One of my favorite books! I could have a conversation about it for hours, but limited characters here. (You can imagine my delight when reading After and saw this book as the book that ties Hardin and Tessa together). Written in relatively old English, it can be a bit of a hard read, but definitely worth it."
