An explosive new series from New York Times bestselling author of the Legend trilogy, Marie Lu Darth Vader, Voldemort, Maleficent. Witness the rise of a new villain. Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their family’s good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites. Teren Santoro works for the king. As Leader of the Inquisition Axis, it is his job to seek out the Young Elites, to destroy them before they destroy the nation. He believes the Young Elites to be dangerous and vengeful, but it’s Teren who may possess the darkest secret of all. Enzo Valenciano is a member of the Dagger Society. This secret sect of Young Elites seeks out others like them before the Inquisition Axis can. But when the Daggers find Adelina, they discover someone with powers like they’ve never seen. Adelina wants to believe Enzo is on her side, and that Teren is the true enemy. But the lives of these three will collide in unexpected ways, as each fights a very different and personal battle. But of one thing they are all certain: Adelina has abilities that shouldn’t belong in this world. A vengeful blackness in her heart. And a desire to destroy all who dare to cross her. It is my turn to use. My turn to hurt.Books in the series: The Young Elites (The First Book of The Young Elites) The Rose Society (The Second Book of The Young Elites)

"3.5 stars

The Young elite: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
The Rose Society: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
The Midnight Star: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Average: 3.33

This is basically the plot of the darkest minds but if they made it darker and made everyone grey. The plot is basically there was a disease going around. The survivors ended up getting physical marks and special ability. They are known as malfettos. They aren’t killed but they are looked down upon, so much that no one cares if a malfetto died.

Adelina is the main character. What makes her interesting is that she is a antihero. She struggles with right and wrong. She has goodness in her and she wants to do good, but there is also darkness that causes her to make bad decisions. A lot of that comes from the abuse that she had to struggle with ever sense she became a malfetto.

She has a sister but it is a complicated relationship. Adelina loves her but she is also jealous of the love that she gets.

During the story there is a romance between Adelina and Enzo. It makes sense why Adelina fell for him. The book does give us a reason (we don’t know if it is true) of why Enzo likes Adelina. I liked Adelina’s protonic relationship with Raffaele. They didn’t get too close but it was well written.

I liked how Marie Lu wrote a main character going dark. A lot of storys have the character being good until one event happens and then they snap. This book was a reread. The read the second book a while ago. Adelina does get darker the more you read the series. She wants to do good but she fueled by anger and revenge. Unlike other books it makes sense for her character to go dark because even in the beginning we are shown the darkness in her. Adelina never has a snapping point. She just makes decisions based on her character. Her darkness is caused by all the bad stuff that happened to her and it kind of builds. It is also caused by something else but i don’t want to say too much.

Everyone is more grey in this book. You would assume that the dagger society is the good guys but they do kill people if it helps them get closer to their goal. We do get a chapter in the point of view of the “villain” of the story and we get a good idea of why he is doing the things he does.

There are only three things that brought down the book. The pacing, romance and world building. The pacing bothered me the most because there would be a lot of action then suddenly it gets slow. This would happen a lot too.

The world was interesting but it just felt like it needed more. The secret society were interesting but i wanted more.

The romance made sense but it needed more development. I read a article that said that Enzo was written more to bring out the darkness in Adelina. I can see it but it still feels like a common YA romance."
