This gets 5 stars for the story, and I’m glad I finally got around to reading this! It’s incredible to me that love could blossom in a place like Auschwitz, but it made reading the horrors a little easier to bear knowing the beautiful connection two souls made despite the terrible circumstances.

I didn’t necessarily love the writing style; it was a bit choppy and disjointed for my taste (which makes sense since it started as a screenplay!), but the most important aspect is the story. Interestingly I previously read Cilka’s Journey and enjoyed it, so I do think my reading experience for this book is related to it being a debut novel, and the change in medium.

Regardless, I encourage everyone to read this. Lale and Gita will stay in my heart for years, and I look forward to revisiting and sharing their story!

HAPPY 1000 BOOKS ON GOODREADS
So I’m aware that the 1000 book mark on Goodreads is arbitrary, since I’ve only been tracking books since 2014 and I’ve been an avid reader all my life. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fair assessment of my reading history since I’ve added books that I feel have been important as I’ve remembered or seen similar books pop up, but it doesn’t capture everything. In reality I’ve passed 1000 a while ago, but it’s still a landmark nonetheless.

That being said, I was stymied by what book should get the dubious distinction of 1000. I have a couple of “safe bets,” or books I knew I would rate high, but I didn’t want the next in a series or anything like that. It was more a question of what book to drag from the depths of my ever growing want to read list. So how I finally determined the choice was by an equally arbitrary metric, which is the oldest book on my TBR shelf.

Now, as I’ve already mentioned, I’ve had Goodreads for a while but I’m really weird about my TBR list. So right now, the oldest book added is only from 2018, despite the fact there were originally older books on there that ended up getting deleted. So The Tattooist of Auschwitz was the last book standing from the various purges over the years. I figured that was a good enough reason as any, along with the fact I just borrowed it from my sister in law. It was a perfect choice!
