"*SPOILER WARNING* (please make sure you are aware of the trigger warnings that this book contains before you read my review or read the book.) I went into this book knowing what was in it. I feel that is a reason a lot of people hate the book is because they went in blind. THIS BOOK DOES NOT START OFF AS A ROMANCE! The book is intended for mature audiences and the warnings should not be taken lightly. This book is more of a 4.75. I wouldn’t quite call it 5 stars but it’s definitely higher then 4. (I’m not very good at writing reviews so I’m sorry if I seem to jump around a lot) I loved this book. The writing was amazing. (She did seem to repeat phrases often. Or used the same comparison.) it wasn’t very noticeable except one when she used the phrase “like he was a piece of furniture” twice within 3 pages. As stated above this is not a romance story! Damen is abused, tortured, SAd and ra*ed. I can’t tell you how many times I was so disgusted by what I was reading I had to take a second and close the book. However I never felt she was trying to romanticize the situation. It was a quick read (I finished in a day) the book is only around 250 pages itself. Mine did come with a short story and a ‘Sneak Peak’ into the second book so I thought the story was a little longer. •I might add more to this review later• overall if you were thinking of reading the book and are aware of all the warnings I would definitely suggest reading it! "3.75 star

Warning this book was controversial and very graphic. You will either love this seires or hate it though I will be a bit biased in my review because I enjoyed it very much. In all confidence I will testify that the author did in no way glorify any of the terrible things that happened here. Honestly when I first started to read this I chastised myself because it seem like just another run of the mill erotic trash novel in which you can predict the outcome at chapter one. I was terribly wrong.

The characters were highly complex and hard to read. They developed so slowly across the trilogy that in the first story I wasn't all to impressed. Except something nagged at me to keep going like this was just a taste to a world much greater. Along with the character arc, the romance was even slower. A burn I could not get enough of which was relatively non-existent in the first book. Though I'm not complaining it was very much worth the wait.

Laurent threw me every which way. I couldn't pin his character down. He was calculating, cruel, and cold as his icy blue glare. But there was something innocent about him, though it was like trying to nuzzle a wild animal at times. Laurent's mind was very sharp. He practically turned scheming into an art form. Laurent reminded me much of Aelin Galathynius in Throne of Glass you never knew what they were planning until it was upon you. My perception of Laurent changed most throughout the trilogy and he became my favorite character. Who doesn't love the ones that bite?

Damen was very honorable and kind which goes against his brutish appearance. He and Laurent were two sides of the same coin. So different in appearance and mannerisms but they fit perfectly. I was very impressed with the lengths that Damen went through to do what was right. And he was so very sweet when it came to the defenseless. Though a brute he would destroy the all warriors around him to save one innocent life. I found Damen very endearing. Laurent never had a chance.

Even though this was mostly character driven the author put forth some nice world building. Also as in the prince's mannerisms their worlds were to entirely different from one another as well. From the clothes to their games and customs. Everything was constructed rather nicely even with the brutality, such is life sometimes. C. S. Pacat didn't shy away from the truth. This first book acclimated me into the world and the other two had me flipping the pages until my eyes shut on their own accord."
"TW: SA/🍇
This book is NOT a romance. Idk if it’ll fall into romance in the next book, but it’s more of a tale about a Prince who was sold off to slavery and robbed of his identity.
I will say that there are some disturbing scenes such as SA. This is mostly shown to display the horror that is Vere (the country Damen was sold to). I understand that it is shown as an example of how the country’s people can be, but I don’t see why it is necessary to make it descriptive.
That being said I was intrigued by the story the whole time, and simultaneously disgusted at times. I do see myself continuing the trilogy to see where this all goes."

"this series is some of the most riveting political intrigue and solid world building I've ever encountered, which is where my attachment lies. I read all three books within three days my first time through. I won't argue for its overall excellence; the diction is inconsistent and awkward in places, there's a ton of gratuitously graphic sexual assault, and the deuteragonist is extremely overpowered. this last point is forgivable to me since it makes the series so very fascinating, though"
