"SPOILER FREE REVEIW Not my usual type of story and deifibtly not my favroite genre so it will probabky be better if you like this genre so take what i say with a grain of salt! The book dosent really have a main plot but it does help capture an actual middle/high school scene! Of course there are some unrealistic parts but its really good. I wasent really too into the book but there was something about it that kept me reading! Which is a great quality for a book. I wasent wxactly having a great time but i was having an ok time. There are quite a few slurs in this book mainly the f slur and the r slur. There are mentions of eating disorders as well. I would not reccomened this to my friends simply because it was not my favorite! I can see how people would like it though."
"i think there’s something poetic about this book. it is my summer reading assignment so i pushed it off but i really shouldn’t have bc it is amazing. i’m a romance girlie til i die so i didn’t think i’d like this but i truly did. i was laughing, crying, disgusted, angry, happy, sad, and wishing i could hug a stranger. i was in high school, i was at a protest, i was in an abusive environment, i was kissing a girl i liked, i was living different situations, i was dying to meet these people, i was dying to not be those people, i was running away from everyone, i was running towards hope. "
"(Read for school) I do understand the importance of this book in exploring Native Americans and living in poverty as well as dealing with grief. However, I HATED the main character. This was the only book where I disliked the inappropriate content. Normally I would ignore it or laugh it off, but in this book it was not necessary. The main character just has really suspicious thoughts for most of the book, especially about women characters. And most of the women characters exist to be objects of beauty and affection and nothing else. And no steps are taken to recognize that the main character is not mature. Also, there is homophobic language and ableist statements that are just made for laughs, and it’s not recognized how bad this is. Yes, the book does have good messages and the characters experience growth, but it’s all drowned in these inappropriate statements. I don’t get how this is semi-autobiographical- some teenage boys may have these kind of thoughts, but they should really be kept private. I really don’t recommend this book, even if it has good themes- it’s simply outdated and doesn’t represent many kinds of people well. "
"This was funny. This was sad. This was painful. This made me feel good.
While this is in fact a fictional story, it definitely feels like an absolutely true diary. It felt like a 14 year old’s private thoughts being put on the page along with his account of his interactions with his community, both on the reservation and off of it.
I can understand why parents may not want this to be apart of classroom curriculum in schools based on sometimes vulgar language, but I think it could absolutely be a part of any high school library. I think a lot of kids may see themselves in this story even if they weren’t raised on a reservation. It just feels so real.
I highly recommend this book. It was a pleasure to read this. "
"This is a great short story about overcoming fears, traditions, and the rough patches along the way that truly tests your human "spirit". Bravo Sherman Alexie."
