In this lush, romantic new epic fantasy series from New York Times bestselling author Hannah Whitten, a young woman’s secret power to raise the dead plunges her into the dangerous and glamorous world of the Sainted King’s royal court. When Lore was thirteen, she escaped a cult in the catacombs beneath the city of Dellaire. And in the ten years since, she’s lived by one rule: don’t let them find you. Easier said than done, when her death magic ties her to the city. Mortem, the magic born from death, is a high-priced and illicit commodity in Dellaire, and Lore’s job running poisons keeps her in food, shelter, and relative security. But when a run goes wrong and Lore’s power is revealed, she’s taken by the Presque Mort, a group of warrior-monks sanctioned to use Mortem working for the Sainted King. Lore fully expects a pyre, but King August has a different plan. Entire villages on the outskirts of the country have been dying overnight, seemingly at random. Lore can either use her magic to find out what’s happening and who in the King’s court is responsible, or die. Lore is thrust into the Sainted King’s glittering court, where no one can be believed and even fewer can be trusted. Guarded by Gabriel, a duke-turned-monk, and continually running up against Bastian, August’s ne'er-do-well heir, Lore tangles in politics, religion, and forbidden romance as she attempts to navigate a debauched and opulent society. But the life she left behind in the catacombs is catching up with her. And even as Lore makes her way through the Sainted court above, they might be drawing closer than she thinks.

"Almost the entire book left me scratching my head. It felt very flat despite all of the interesting ideas in it. The characters all started very intriguing, but I found that after their introduction, they stopped acting like themselves. Every action felt forced by the need to have a plot and not because that's what they would do in these situations. The love triangle was disappointing and forced by a lousy excuse of feeling like they "know" each other. By the end of the book, I was excited it was over and that I had guessed so much of the plot from the beginning :/ I will probably not finish the series"
"I liked the characters but found the plot meandered too much. I will probably read the sequel, but it's not a certainty. "

"I HATE LOVE TRIANGLES. But otherwise it was a good book. I think it was kind of long and a little bit stretched out. The world was confusing like I don't think that the world building was done well especially because I kept being confused as to what exactly their "powers" were and how they worked. Like i understood it at a basic level but every time she used it i was just like huh. The plot fell a little flat because they kept coming up with different conclusions but because the world was still a little unknown it wasn't like surprising or anything it just felt like the story was just moving along. It did give off YA vibes even though they were like 24 but Lore kind of acted a little bit immaturely for someone who supposedly went through so much and should probably be a bit more knowledgeable but she kind of just acted like a teenager almost. If this was a YA book I would understand cuz the only one that I could have believed was older than teenager was Bastian. And I loved Bastian. More than Gabe. Gave was annoying I didn't like him. He felt very hot and cold and I couldn't tell if that was because he was supposed to be like complex or if he just sucks. "
"3.5 / 5 Heavy world building, very intriguing though. It definitely was a bit long winded in parts which is why it didn’t score better. I will be reading the next one definitely! "

"Where to even start? It's easy to write a review when you have strong emotions like hate or love. But I'm somewhere in-between. The first half of the book was intriguing. I thought the world was immersive and atmospheric. And while it did seem to take place in a European setting, the characters didn't speak or act as such.
After the halfway mark the story became stagnate. I easily lost interest. The betrayal was predictable among other things. Neither storyline nor character arc progressed. I barely had the desire to finish the book much less read the next one or even write this review.

"It was a great book! I liked her first series better, as I felt the female main character had more depth to her, but overall, it was enjoyable. The romance aspect was pretty decent and the world building was nothing too complex but easy to grasp. A great book if you’re looking for a fun fantasy read. "
