Herman Melville
A literary classic that wasn't recognized for its merits until decades after its publication, Herman Melville's Moby-Dick tells the tale of a whaling ship and its crew, who are carried progressively further out to sea by the fiery Captain Ahab. Obsessed with killing the massive whale, which had previously bitten off Ahab's leg, the seasoned seafarer steers his ship to confront the creature, while the rest of the shipmates, including the young narrator, Ishmael, and the harpoon expert, Queequeg, must contend with their increasingly dire journey. The book invariably lands on any short list of the greatest American novels.

"When I was reading this I thought it was boring. In all honesty I just wanted to seem better than everyone else. But once I finished Moby Dick I actually loved it. If a 14 year old can enjoy this novel then I think anyone can. "

"The White Whale very much lived up to its hype as a timeless classic! Wonderfully vast in its scope, Melville discusses all-encompassing truths of humanity through his focus on whaling. Historical and philosophical digressions switch off with detailed explanations of all aspects of the whaling industry, and the plot of the Pequod is interspersed in the midst of all of this. Bravery, madness, and destiny jockey for first place in what it means to live a perilous life at sea. A hefty, but rewarding read! Also, the Clothbound Penguin Classics edition is fantastic!"
"I've picked this book up several times in the past 20 or so years and never made it past the first couple chapters. I guess it just needed to be the right time. While I liked the book and it kept me interested, I found Ishmael's tangents odd and at points felt like I was reading a test book rather than a story."
"This book is ridiculously long and difficult to get through with a print edition. I seriously recommend getting an audiobook, and not just any audiobook. Do your research and find the best one, and the story literally comes to life. For most people, this is one of those books that is very difficult to unlock, but is absolutely beautiful and inspiring once you do. Good luck!"
"Probably Murakami's Kafka on the Shore! On a completely different note, basically tied with Less by Andrew Sean Greer. If you're interested in something a little closer to Moby, I would rec either If on a winter's night a traveler by Italo Calvino or Back by Henry Green. :) A little more classical feeling with those two."
"Fun and unexpected bonus (3 pages) of whale descriptions. In addition to the mental journey of Ahab in search for his white whale in life. #action #classics "
