NATIONAL BESTSELLER • “Lush with secrets, magic, and a past that won’t stay where it belongs, this novel is (quite fittingly) spellbinding.”—JODI PICOULT, author of Wish You Were HereA deeply atmospheric story about ancestral magic, an unsolved murder, and a second chance at true loveONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: She ReadsEmery Blackwood’s life changed forever the night her best friend was found dead and the love of her life, August Salt, was accused of murdering her. Years later, she is doing what her teenage self swore she never would: living a quiet existence on the misty, remote shores of Saoirse Island and running the family’s business, Blackwood’s Tea Shoppe Herbal Tonics & Tea Leaf Readings. But when the island, rooted in folklore and magic, begins to show signs of strange happenings, Emery knows that something is coming. The morning she wakes to find that every single tree on Saoirse has turned color in a single night, August returns for the first time in fourteen years and unearths the past that the town has tried desperately to forget.August knows he is not welcome on Saiorse, not after the night everything changed. As a fire raged on at the Salt family orchard, Lily Morgan was found dead in the dark woods, shaking the bedrock of their tight-knit community and branding August a murderer. When he returns to bury his mother’s ashes, he must confront the people who turned their backs on him and face the one wound from his past that has never healed—Emery. But the town has more than one reason to want August gone, and the emergence of deep betrayals and hidden promises spanning generations threaten to reveal the truth behind Lily’s mysterious death once and for all.

"I started this book expecting magic, romance, and mystery. I was really excited to read it, as I have enjoyed many of her other novels. But…ultimately I was disappointed. There is magic, romance, and mystery in very small doses and never enough to keep me up reading past my bedtime. It is not YA but reads very YA in my opinion. I will continue to read books by this author, but this one is not my fave. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5"

Overall I’m giving this 3.5 stars and rounding up. This was very different than I was expecting. I’m not sure if this is supposed to be a horror novel, but the ending was a textbook spooky movie ending. It was angsty, mysterious, odd and slightly ridiculous. Even though I liked it, I don’t recommend it if you are looking for an epic conclusion to a murder mystery. The final merging of the storylines to reveal the “whodunnit” at the end was anticlimactic. "The night her bestfriend was found dead, Emery Blackwood’s life changed forever. Not only that but the love of her life, August Salt, was the only suspect. Years after that night, she is doing exactly the opposite of what she dreamed. Emery is living a quiet existence on the remote shores of Saoirse Island and running the family business. Saoirse is an island rooted in folklore and magic, suddenly it starts to show signs that something is coming. One morning she wakes to find the island trying to tell her something and August has returned after 14 years and the past that they’ve been trying so hard to cover it, is beginning to resurface.
August is aware that Saoirse does not want him back home after that horrible night. After a fire raged in the towns orchard, Lily Morgan is found dead, the right knit community is shaken and August is thought to be a murderer. When August returns to the island to bury his mother, he must face the town that brandished him a killer and an important tart of his past he could never get past— Emery. The more that’s uncovered, it seems the town has more than one reason to keep August away. Hidden promises, deep betrays spanning generations all threaten to reveal the truth behind Lily’s death and the fire.
This book is better than I originally thought it would be. It kept me entranced from beginning to end! Although it does not have strong references to magic, it is still enough to keep you enthralled if that’s something you enjoy. The book does explain current day as well as the past and the days leading up to when everything changed so that you have some back story to what’s going on with characters and scene. It also allows you to see different viewpoints from the main characters so you know what is going on in their heads and what they’re experiencing. I found myself trying to piece things together throughout the book and it still seemed to shock me on many different points. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I think that it will hold some surprises for most people but even if you guess the entire plot, I think it was absolutely a stunning book for me. If you like magic, family burdens/ trauma, a childhood love story, or an island kept secret, then this book is great for you. It was so good I couldn’t put it down! "
"A great read! A very fun combo of a murder mystery and a bit of magic. It starts off a bit slow, but as the pieces started to come together I couldn’t put it down. I loved the characters, their relationships, and the description of the island (which could honestly be considered a character in its own right). I felt like I was there and I enjoyed it a lot! "

"That was a bit of a journey....but I can see that I'll be on the unpopular side of things. The writing was more disjointed than I would've liked, it wasn't very cohesive, and nothing much happened in the story it just dragged along. The murder mystery/thriller part I loved, when I knew what was going on. But the characters weren't enough to drive the story, I felt no connection to them and most of the time didn't know what their motives were. Overall my rating for this book is 2/5.

Extended Breakdown:
Characters: 1/5
Story: 2.5/5
Pace: 2/5

TikTok: @wvbookwitch
Blog: http://wvbookwitch.blogspot.com/"
