An American expatriate in Rome unearths his family legacy in this sweeping novel by the acclaimed author of The Prince of Tides and The Great Santini A Southerner living abroad, Jack McCall is scarred by tragedy and betrayal. "I read one of Conroy’s previous novels and liked it a lot but this one I just couldn’t stomach. The protagonist of this novel is just of putting. Arrogant and snobbish. I’m sure there’s a plot to this and it comes out in the end but I was halfway and couldn’t stomach any more. DNF"

"Reading Pat Conroy is like reading poetry. Each sentence is beautiful on its on and yet his novels as a whole are epically moving. Any book by Conroy is a masterpiece."
