Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1

"This 3h 2m movie is Chapter 1 of 4 in a film series of westerns directed, co-written, produced by, and starring Kevin Costner. Besides Kevin, it includes a killer cast (pun intended), including, but not limited to: Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, and Luke Wilson (plus MANY more...). I also noticed Dale Dickey (unmistakeable and recognized right away) in here, who plays the part of Mrs. Sykes. She's one of my favorites and is PERFECT for her part in here, albeit a somewhat smaller role thus far. I noted Kathleen Quinlan will be in Chapter 2. This deals with the expansion/settlement of the American West in the years during the Civil War. There's plenty of VERY unfriendly, unsavory, downright mean, slimy characters in this as well as plenty of killing (thus probably the need for more actors in this to carry on the story, right). This is probably to be expected of a western in general, and I'm not complaining about ANY of that at all, however, as that all contributes to what makes this VERY interesting!! Without this and other various types of drama, I'd probably get bored and bail, regardless of its slower pace. I had no desire to bail on this one, absolutely not. ALSO: The "DETAIL" on the set, clothing, landscape, all of it... CHECK IT OUT!! Yes, you can tell a bit of thought went into that... Even IF it had been a lousy story, which it was NOT imo, I super enjoyed looking in the background at all these various painstaking-appearing details included on set. Chapter 1 ended with a montage preview of Chapter 2, and I'll definitely tune in for that!! Looked really good!!!! For those who watched/liked "1883," you might like this. I look forward to Chapters 2, 3, and 4 to be released on Max in the future and will be looking for those for sure!! PS: Read Paige H's [ @paige_h_2163 ] FANTASTIC description!!"

"For True Cinema lovers I think this is a must see. I definitely recommend going into it with a open mind. First, Wow the visuals and cinematography are just breathtaking the environment is so detailed with dusty hills to old timey settlements. Costner has done an amazing job really Weaving and layering the story while some will feel that it starts kinda slowburn you can really feel that Costner wanted you to feel immersed in the story and understand the deeply interwoven stories. Im also amazed by the attention to detail in every facet from the environments to the costumes and to the brutally real aspects of what life was like back then. This story is definitely not one-sided you are seeing it from so many points of view whether that be Native Americans, Settlers, cowboys, Chinese immigrants, or the Army. This film definitely doesn't pull punches your seeing the brutal realities of the American frontier with the violence survival and loss of life, I think that's one of the films biggest strengths showing the complexities of the history. Another thing to mention is the amazing cast with their amazing performances left us with very realistic and memorable characters. Horizon is more than just a movie its an immersive journey that takes you through frontier life. If you are interested in the Wild West this is a must see. "

"I wanted to give Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 a fair try, but I couldn't even make it through 45 minutes of it. I was bored out of my mind and didn't care one bit about what was happening to any of the characters. I wasn't expecting this to come across as so generic and flat. Also, I was expecting Kevin Costner to play the main character but he hadn't even appeared by the time I turned it off. I like several of the other cast members, but unfortunately I just couldn't do it to see them. The best part about this is the beauty of the natural world we get to see. I'm glad I decided to skip this at the movie theater. I don't know if I would have been able to sit there for all three hours!"

"Cinematography 5 stars, plot 0 stars. I’ve never seen a movie with a plot that’s harder to follow than this one. It was all over the place with little character development. The last 10-15 minutes were what felt like fast forward showing, what I hope are, scenes from future movies. I’m still committed to watching the rest of the movies but I will have to see how number 2 turns out."

"Captivating storyline that does an excellent job of weaving a (fictional) tale of a complicated and difficult time in American history based around some true events. For me, parts of this story evoked several emotions and portrayed the difficulties of life during that time. I think most fans of westerns and the westward expansion era will love this film. "Not going to lie, I saw the reviews and decided not to watch it in theaters and I regret that now. However, it did leave a lot to desire considering it was 3 hours. Regardless, I'm excited for part two. "

"54 minutes in and there is still no main character(s) or plot- I feel like this is a movie version of little boys playing cowboy and Indian. I loved Yellowstone and Kevin Costner in it, and the beautiful landscape- I was at least hoping to bask in the natural beauty- but so much killing does not allow that. 2 more hours to go… "
